A model about test automation mindsets
Test automation is a huge topic that is difficult to navigate. To make matters worse, there’s no structured model to figure out how to best approach test automation. I created the Test Automation Roadmap to create some structure.
The Test Automation Roadmap is a simple yet powerful model that helps people, teams, departments, and even entire organizations navigate test automation. It defines five different test automation mindsets:
- First steps 👣 — Prove that test automation works for your situation
- Cherry-pick 🍒 — Automate low-hanging fruit and high-risk features
- Everything 🚀 — Automate everything unless it takes too much effort due to technical reasons
- Multi-team 🤝 — Automate chain tests with your neighbors
- Enterprise 🌍 — Compliance at scale
Understanding these mindsets can help you decide what you or your team should do next. It can also help you understand how others test. And, of course, it can help you to create your personal test automation roadmap.
What test automation are you doing right now? Where do you want to end up in the future? What do you need to change to get there?
